East Side Story

Crossing the bridge from Palo Alto into East Palo Alto, multi-million dollar homes and tree-lined streets abruptly give way to boarded-up businesses and bars on windows. The Silicon Valley suburb, home to Stanford University and Hewlett-Packard, has little in common with its eastern neighbor. While much has changed since East Palo Alto was named murder capital of the world in 1992, crime and unemployment rates are still high, and the two towns, separated by a freeway, still interact very little — save for border-crossers, who live, work and shop on different sides of the divide.
