Recycled Tensions

Interstate 580, a massive freeway with a few dark underpasses, divides booming Emeryville from stagnant West Oakland. Destitute can collectors use these passages to drag their goods from Emeryville to a recycling center in West Oakland.

These border-crossers cause tension between residents on both sides hoping to "clean up" the neighborhood. While Emeryville's border sports endless new development projects, West Oakland's side of I-580 decays into a ghost town, sheltering the homeless, drug dealers and a few self-proclaimed urban pioneers.
